Spirits Soar ~ (The Wind Rises)

My entry for dA's "The Wind Rises" contest (Feb 21st - Feb 27th, 2014)! I had a general idea of what I wanted to portray right away and am pleased with how I could work in more symbolism that I initially had thought about. My aim with the imagery was to encompass an idea that even title of the movie itself gets across: the wind will rise. Disappointment can be used to become motivation. Set backs are actually set ups for something greater. Forces that seem negative in your life are actually there to help you along the way. Wind can be powerful and damaging, but it can also be the one crucial source to literally make dreams - like aircraft - come true. Love for what you do, love for your country, and love for another person are all things that help you along the way.

Really long explanation: The poster is supposed to be reminiscent of WWII-era graphic design seen around the world, regardless of their politics. Jiro and Nahoko stand together, united, side-by-side as they look towards the east at sunset almost as though they are looking at the end of their long journey and reflecting on their lives with contentment. A swirl of papers - diagrams, doodles, business plans, rough drafts, final drafts, letters of correspondence, paper airplanes - erupts from where the couple stands and ultimately gives birth to the full-fledged aircrafts Jiro helps build as an engineer. The realized planes soar in the sunset towards the east as a lasting accomplishment forever to be associated with Jiro's hard work. In the background, there are two overlapping shapes of a red circle and a heart. The red circle represents the setting sun on dreams fulfilled as well as the symbol from Japan's national flag. Jiro's love for his country and dedication to being involved - even if he was barred from being a pilot because of his eyesight - is a key element in his overall success. The film chronicles numerous periods of difficulty in Japanese culture but the importance of country remains. The heart in the center also represents love for your country, but also love for what you are meant to do in life - your passions, your talent, your heart's true purpose - as well as love for another person that inspires and moves you. Jiro's love of his country, aircraft/etc, his friends, and Nahoko all propel him through tumultuous times and setbacks to eventually see his biggest goals accomplished.

Almost everything was done in Adobe Illustrator except for piecing elements together at the end into the required format as well as making the papers/etc. Images from the "Asset Pack" dA provided were used as reference for both Jiro and Nahoko's portraits and the overall color scheme; other official images from the film (not in the asset pack) were used as reference for the planes. Total time is hard to say, but I did it in one afternoon/evening. Very happy with how it came out. I'm a huge Miyazaki fan and can't wait to see this film.
